Ayutthaya was the capital city (the second capital after Sukothai) of Siam for over 400 years. When the Burmese sacked the city in the 1767, many Buddha statues were desecrated, possibly including the one shown here. A sacred fig tree later grew up around it and the head became embedded in the trunk of the tree.
