The candle festival has been held in Ubon for over 50 years and is part of the celebrations for Buddhist Lent. Huge floats are made and decorated with either carved wax or wax filigree. They are made at temples from around the region and much care goes into the floats not only for the pride of winning, but also for prize money, as the floats are judged in a competition.
