Thailand is truly one of my favorite places on earth. The combination of culture, hospitality, beauty, and culinary tastes makes it a place that nearly everyone can enjoy. I worked in Thailand for one year with the Royal Forestry Department, in Ubonratchathani province, about one hour from the Laos border and about two hours from Cambodia. The work was set up by VSO, a nonprofit group that sends professionals overseas to help improve the livelihoods of people in developing countries. I highly recommend this organization for anyone interested in volunteering. Prior to starting my work, I studied the language for 10 weeks in a quaint little beach town called Hua Hin. I was with about 13 other volunteers during this time and we became great friends. Some are still in Thailand even now, several years later. Others have moved on, but we all keep a part of this country in our hearts. I've been back several times since leaving in March 2005 and each time I am reminded of why I love the place so much.
