Indonesia
Indonesia is at the front lines these days when speaking about global conservation actions and especially with respect to deforestation. My work involves mapping deforestation in Asia, so it was natural to eventually be sent to this vast archipelago. Indonesia is the 4th most populous country in the world, and the world's largest Muslim nation. It's comprised of approximately 15,000 islands, has some of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in the world, contains a vast richness of both plants and animals, and also of cultures, with over 500 languages spoken here, mostly in Papua. It's a fascinating place and I am only beginning to fully appreciate it. I have spent most of my time in Java, in the capital Jakarta and in nearby Bogor. But I also spent a week vacationing in Bali, which was delightful.
